The Southern Arkansas tennis program made school history on Wednesday when Stuart Rehfuss was named the Great American Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week.
Rehfuss becomes the first player in program history to receive the conference's individual weekly award, while also becoming the first SAU men's tennis player to receive individual accolade since 1992-93.
Rehfuss, a sophomore from Xanten, Germany, went unbeaten in six matches this past weekend in Memphis. Competing as the Muleriders' No. 1 singles and doubles player, Rehfuss defeated Spring Hill College's Cedric Nitz (4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-3) in his first match of the season. On Saturday, Rehfuss topped Christian Brothers' Paul Chabaud (6-2, 6-3), before knocking off Rhodes College's Ritwik Chatterjee (6-0, 6-2).
In doubles action, Rehfuss teamed up with junior Aleksandr Pokusaev and the duo won a trio of contests over Spring Hill College (6-1), Christian Brothers (6-4) and Rhodes College (8-6) to help Southern Arkansas move to 3-0 on the young season; the program's first wins since being revitalized for competition in November of 2017.
Rehfuss and the Muleriders are back in action this weekend in Midlothian, Texas for a pair of matches. SAU opens up with region foe Washburn on Friday, and will match up with Texas-Permian Basin the following day.
