Magnolia’s high school basketball season begins this week with non-conference action.
Conference realignments earlier this year dropped Magnolia into Class 4A in all sports except football. Magnolia will play conference basketball in Class 4A-8, which includes Camden Fairview, Monticello, Hamburg, Crossett, Star City and Warren.
Magnolia’s high school enrollment of 660 at realignment has a 120-student high school grade enrollment advantage over Camden Fairview and between 170 and 300 students in the rest of 4A-8.
Magnolia’s senior girls have their first game at home on Tuesday against Genoa Central. Ninth-grade girls and the boys B team will start the action at 5 p.m.
Both the MHS boys and girls will be in action on Friday in El Dorado after B boys and girls games. The games will start at 5 p.m.
Smackover, Ashdown, Benton, El Dorado, Nevada and the Camden Holiday Class are on the varsity girls’ schedule through December. The varsity boys have games against Smackover, Ashdown, Benton, Nevada, Texas High and the Camden Holiday Classic on the November-December schedule.
Class 4A-8 play starts January 4 with Magnolia on the road against Crossett and also on the road January 8 against Monticello.
Magnolia’s first Class 4A-8 home came will be Friday, January 11 against Star City.
The junior high district tournament will be February 9-14.
The regular varsity basketball season will wrap up with February 15 games against Warren at home.
Class 4A regional tournaments will be February 18-23 with the state tournament site to follow at a location yet to be determined.
