Registration has begun for a Magnolia-area soccer association.

Registration has begun for a Magnolia-area soccer association that hopes to schedule competition under the auspices of the Arkansas State Soccer Association.

Parents of players ages 10-17 who are interested are invited to attend an informational meeting to be held in Room 103 of the Watson Athletic Center at Southern Arkansas University.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. Thursday.

There will be a “fun scrimmage” after the meeting so players are encouraged to bring cleats and shin guards if they have them.

People who are interested but unable to attend the meeting may contact Nelson Irizarry via email at for information.

Jim Walker, executive director of the ASSA, said the association offers the ability to participate in leagues at a recreational or competitive level.

“Most of the rec teams are closer to the Little Rock area but I do have teams in Hot Springs, Arkadelphia and Bryant, among others,” Walker told

“We work with clubs/teams to create a schedule that works for everyone. This is also the case with those teams that want to play competitively, as we work hard to minimize travel distances as much as possible.

“Additionally, clubs are able to request in-person coaching courses at their facility to cut down on travel for their coaches to become better educated in the sport to better develop Arkansas players. We work with clubs to build, develop and maintain their referee program. And, of course, we do provide insurance for players, referees, and coaches, as well as director and officer coverage for the board members,” Walker said.

ASSA allows clubs to use GotSoccer as their platform for registering players.

The association also assists with grant writing, sponsorship agreements, fundraising ideas, contracts and more.
