An underground electrical transformer caught fire in downtown El Dorado about 11:25 a.m. Thursday, sending black smoke billowing around the Union County Courthouse square.
The fire broke out near the corner of Elm and Jefferson streets, just northeast of the courthouse, in the area of Marilyn’s, which is a lounge on the east side of the square across Elm Street from Murphy-Pitard Jewelers.
The El Dorado Fire Department said on its Facebook page that the fire has been contained. Firefighters left the scene about 1:30 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
Entergy Corporation said that about 109 customers in the square area were without electrical service.
