An El Dorado cardiologist died about 2:11 p.m. Sunday as his car attempted to pass another vehicle on U.S. 82 east of El Dorado.
According to a preliminary Arkansas State Police report, Dr. Aldo V. Fonticiella was driving a 2001 model Lexus LS west on the highway near Red Gaddy Road, about six miles east of El Dorado.
Fonticiella attempted to pass another westbound vehicle, a 2016 model Chevrolet Malibu driven by Harlie M. Ballard, 18, of El Dorado.
Fonticiella apparently lost control of his car. The right front bumper of the Lexus struck the rear driver’s side of the Malibu. The Ballard Malibu exited the right side of the highway. Fonticeilla’s car also left the right side of the road and struck a tree.
Dr. Fonticiella, who was associated with Heart Associates of South Arkansas, was killed in the accident.
Ballard and her two passengers, Donna P. Ballard, 53; and Cora C. Parks, 77, all of El Dorado, were taken to South Arkansas Medical Center for treatment.
The weather was clear and the road was dry.
Trooper Victor H. Meza investigated the Union County accident for the Arkansas State Police.
