Two killed

Two Sheridan High School students died Tuesday when their vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer during a rainstorm.

Two Sheridan High School seniors died about 1:12 p.m. Tuesday in a collision on U.S. 270 east of Sheridan near Clearwater Lake Estates.

The students were not identified in a preliminary Arkansas State Police report due to their age, and a statement issued Tuesday night by the Sheridan School District did not name them.

However, social media and other sources identified them as Hunter Kesterson of Hensley and Carson Fleming of Prattsville.

According to the report, one of youths was driving a 2004 model Ford west on the highway during a rainstorm. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the road and struck a culvert. The car re-entered the roadway and crossed the center line, colliding with the left front of an eastbound 2014 model Kenworth tractor-trailer.

The driver and his male passenger were both ejected and died at the scene.

Trooper Tyler G. Smith investigated the accident for the Arkansas State Police.

The truck driver was not injured and was not identified in the report.

Sheridan schools are closed this week due to the Thanksgiving holiday. However, the district said the high school cafeteria would be opened at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

“Counselors will be available to help our students and staff cope with this tragedy,” the statement said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with these families and their friends at this incredibly difficult time. This is a very sad day for our students, staff and school community. Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it is sudden. It is important that we show compassion and support each other,” the statement said.
