Hot Springs homicide

Christopher Gipson, 20, is charged with capital murder in the shooting death of former Magnolia resident Tristan Amaru Smith, 23.

An arrest was made Tuesday in the case of a former Magnolia resident who was shot and killed on Sunday in Hot Springs.

The body of Tristan Amaru Smith, 23, was found in the back seat of a car parked at the intersection of Mica and Maiden streets on the east side of Hot Springs. The crime scene was about 200 feet from the rear of St. Mark Baptist Church.

Police responded about 10 a.m. Sunday to a welfare check on a man inside the car. They said Smith died from an apparent gunshot wound.

Hot Springs Police said in a statement on Tuesday that Christopher Deandre Deshon Gipson, 20, of 231 Autumn, Hot Springs has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Gipson is charged with capital murder, aggravated robbery and theft by receiving. He is held at the Garland County Detention Center with no bond.

Smith’s Facebook page said that he is a native of Magnolia but graduated from Hot Springs High School.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Reed Funeral Home of Magnolia.
