A Ford Explorer with five young people from El Dorado and Smackover overturned early Tuesday south of El Dorado. One of the passengers died and the other four were injured.
According to a preliminary Arkansas State Police report, the wreck happened on South Field Road Cutoff, a half-mile west of U.S. 167, about 1:07 a.m.
Samantha N. Rhoades, 16, 6516 Magnolia Highway, was driving east on South Field Road when the 2002 model Explorer overturned. Killed at the scene was Gage A. Shoffner, 18, 201 McDonald, Smackover. He was a senior at Smackover High School.
Rhoades and the other injured youths were taken to the Medical Center of South Arkansas in El Dorado with injuries. They were identified as Tristan Martinius, 15, 205 Union 851, El Dorado; Savannah Jones, 18, 2890 Haynesville Highway, El Dorado; and Robert Fowler, 17, 552 Stephens Highway.
All the people in the vehicle except Fowler wore seat belts, including Shoffner.
Shoffner’s body was released to Bailey Funeral Home of El Dorado.
The weather was clear and the road was dry at the time of the wreck.
