A friend helping another change a tire on Interstate 20 was killed early Saturday when a tractor-trailer struck both of them.

Louisiana State Police Troop G responded the accident about 12:13 a.m. involving two pedestrians at milepost 30 in Bossier Parish.

Brandon D. Hewitt, 25, of Shreveport was killed and Nicholas Johnson, 22, of Ruston was seriously injured.

According to investigating troopers, Johnson was stopped on the westbound shoulder of Interstate 20 after his 2003 Nissan Altima suffered a flat on its left side. Hewitt arrived to assist and subsequently parked his 2004 Chevrolet Malibu behind the Altima. While the flat tire was being changed, a 2009 Volvo tractor-trailer, that was traveling west in the right lane, traveled off the right side of the roadway onto the westbound shoulder. The right side of the tractor trailer struck Johnson and Hewitt.

The tractor trailer, which was registered to FedEx Freight Inc, was being operated by Milton D. Magee, 43, of Clinton, MS. The Altima and Malibu were not damaged in crash.

Hewitt sustained fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bossier Parish coroner. Johnson was airlifted to Willis-Knighton North in Shreveport with serious injuries.

Magee, was not injured in the crash, was ticketed for improper lane usage.
