Anthony Brown, 49. of Parkdale, was convicted Wednesday of murder in the first degree.

Around 11 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, Ashley County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of School Street in Parkdale, in reference to an incident where a man, later identified as Jesse Burton, 47, was injured.

Allegedly, Brown had thrown gasoline on Burton, setting him on fire. Mr. Burton died as a result of his injuries.

The jury could not reach a unanimous decision on the sentence.

Judge Bynum Gibson sentenced Brown to life in prison.
