Three people died and three more were injured about 1:06 p.m. Tuesday in an Interstate 30 construction zone collision that involved two passenger vehicles and three tractor-trailers.
The accident happened in the westbound lanes near the 56-mile marker between the Okolona and Gurdon exits.
According to a preliminary Arkansas State Police report, the accident happened when David R. Anderson, 50, of Oswego, NY, driving a 2018 Freightliner in the outside lane, failed to adjust his speed for traffic stopped in the construction zone.
Anderson’s truck hit the rear of a 2018 Nissan driven by Andres Chaidez, 49, of Houston. Chaidez’ car veered into the inside lane, where it sideswiped a 2012 Chevrolet and traveled forward, becoming wedged between two tractor-trailers that had stopped side-by-side for the construction.
Chaidez survived but his three female passengers were killed. They were Murillo Trinidad, 64, and Angelina Chaidez Villereal, 55, both of Buena Park, CA, and Ana L. Chaidez, 49, also of Houston.
Anderson and his passenger, Terry J. Imboden, 63, of Birmingham, AL, were injured. The injured were initially taken to Baptist Health-Arkadelphia.
The drivers and occupants of the Chevrolet and the two forward tractor-trailers, a 2016 Freightliner and a 2014 Volvo, were not injured and were not named in the report.
The weather was clear and the road was dry.
Cpl. Edward G. Church investigated the accident for the Arkansas State Police.
