CAMDEN -- The child of a Camden police officer died about 1:53 p.m. Thursday in an accidental shooting.
Camden Police Chief Boyd M. Woody said in a statement that officers responded to 1516 Copeland in response to an unknown situation.
They found Jessica Faulkner in the living room of the house holding her three-year-old son.
The boy had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to the Ouachita County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Faulkner told police that she and her son were at home alone. She said she left her son briefly to go to a bathroom when she heard a gunshot. She went into the back bedroom of the house where she found the boy on the floor next to a bed with a wound to his head.
Camden police and the Arkansas State Police are investigating the tragedy. Woody said it appears that the boy found a loaded pistol in the bedroom and accidentally shot himself.
The father is Camden Police Officer Alec Faulkner, who was on duty at the time of the shooting.
