We thank everyone at the Columbia County Health Unit for helping with our Facebook live stream on Thursday. The Health Unit and its helpers administered hundreds of vaccines during the annual mass flu clinic. We’re going all out not to become a flu victim this season, and wanted to help promote the clinic with our live coverage. Twana Hendricks, director of the Health Unit, obliged us by delivering our vaccine live. No one wants your flu. Make sure that you and members of your family get their vaccine, and encourage your co-workers to have their shot.
We’re told that a delay in the surfacing of the parking lot has caused McDonalds to reschedule the reopening of the Magnolia restaurant by one day, to 5 a.m. Friday, October 4.
Southern Arkansas leads the Great American Conference in only one football statistical category – red zone offense. SAU has scored all seven times it has been in the red zone. That’s to say it has scored each time the Muleriders offense got inside the 20-yard line. SAU has scored three touchdowns and four field goals in the red zone. Of course, you’ve got to BE in the red zone to affect that particular statistic. In SAU’s 31-0 loss to Harding last week, the Muleriders never got inside the Bisons 30, much less the 20.
Magnolia travels to Texarkana tonight to play Arkansas High. It’s times like these when one wonders how the Arkansas High Razorbacks would fare against the Arkansas Razorbacks. But the Fayetteville squad doesn’t play in the Class 5A-South so we’ll never know.
Our last online poll on the topic of deer hunting inside the Magnolia City Limits was in 2013. The issue comes up from time to time. Some communities that have felt overrun by deer authorize bowhunting. With the hunting season upon us, this is a good time to consider the issue and to see if there's been any large shift in opinion either way. Vote in our new online poll.
Arkansas Children’s Hospital was out Thursday with its plan to build a clinic in Pine Bluff. We responded to a couple of tweets, encouraging Arkansas Children’s to build a satellite facility in Magnolia. We also noted our standing protest that Pine Bluff should more properly be described as a Little Rock suburb and not used as a cover for individuals or institutions who claim they’re serving South Arkansas.
Several people have asked us about the article regarding Dr. Lisa Toms that was recently published in Arkansas Business magazine. Sorry, we’re not authorized to republish it. We do encourage people to get their own subscriptions to Arkansas Business.
The U.S. Department of Justice has approved the merger of GateHouse Media (perhaps more properly referred to as “HellHouse” Media, for its actions throwing South Arkansas newspaper readers under the bus) with Gannett. Dark day for newspapers in dozens of U.S. cities.
