Couldn’t have asked for better weather for the Columbia County Fair Parade on Monday. Well, yeah, 15 degrees cooler would have been nice but the sun did go behind a cloud on Monday afternoon, so that was nice. Then we were off to the fairgrounds for a little food and fun. We always enjoy going to the fair because we run into people we know. It’s a great community event and a wonderful shared experience. We’ve said it many times. Memories of events like the fair are among those things that draw young people back to our community in later years, or become part of their fondest remembrances. We have a community responsibility to make the most of the opportunity that the fair represents.

We streamed the Fair Parade to our Magnolia Reporter on Facebook audience, and reposted the video on our website. Unfortunately, Facebook throws curve balls when it cuts out at inconvenient times. We had to reboot with the last few parade units to go, and we missed a few. Almost all of the parade was videoed and is available on our website.

As memorable as Austin Wilkerson’s field goal was for Southern Arkansas on Saturday night, more memorable moments were provided by the SAU Marching Band. Under David Torres, the new director of Athletic Bands, the band put on a pre-game show the likes of which we’ve never seen at Wilkins Stadium. The SAU band is certainly moving in the right direction as entertainment. SAU’s Family Day on Saturday gives people who missed last Saturday’s show a great reason to come to the football game and see the pre-game and halftime shows. The football game ought to be pretty good, too.

The "smoke house" is visiting local schools this week as students learn about fire safety. This presents a great opportunity for parents to re-enforce what their children have learned by conducting a fire safety drill at home.

Our current online poll asks readers what they think about the minimum wage in Arkansas. The results have been see-sawing. A plurality thinks Arkansas voters did the right thing to approve a statewide minimum wage. But the majority thinks that in retrospect, setting the wage at this level is not a good idea. We’ll run this poll for a few more hours today.
