A Homer, LA man was killed early Friday when he was struck by a westbound Union Pacific train near the Oak Street crossing in McNeil.
Reginald Renaldo Harper, 46, was apparently lying inside one of the two tracks at the crossing when he was struck.
The accident was reported to Columbia County Central Dispatch at 12:59 a.m.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Arkansas State Police and Columbia County Ambulance Service responded to a report of a man being struck by a train. A search was conducted that discovered Harper’s body beneath the train.
The body was sent to the Arkansas Crime Lab for an autopsy.
Friday’s fatality was the first instance of a death involving a train in Columbia County since 2014. That accident happened about 100 feet west of the same crossing when an El Dorado man who was attempting to traverse the tracks fell into a train’s path.
This was the third fatal transportation accident in Columbia County this year. There were two fatalities in 2018, three in 2017, five in 2016, two in 2015, four in 2014 and five each in 2013 and 2012.
