There’s a new scam at work in Columbia County that’s targeting, wait for it -- registered sex offenders.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday that scammers are calling locally registered sex offenders, claiming to be representatives of the Sheriff’s Office.
“The scammers are stating that there is a warrant for their arrest, and they must turn themselves in or pay a large sum of money. Please do not fall victim to this scam. If we have something for you, you will receive it by mail, or we will contact you in person. We will never ask for money over the phone (or other avenue),” the Sheriff’s Office said in an email.
Impersonating a law enforcement officer is a Class A felony in Arkansas. Class D felonies by punishable by up to six years in prison, and a fine of up to $10,000.
