Emerson man dies, four young people hurt when truck hits tree near Lake Columbia

An Emerson man was killed and four other young people were injured late Wednesday in a single-vehicle wreck on Columbia County Road 53 about 6.5 miles from Magnolia.

According to an Arkansas State Police report, Austin Blake Glass, 19, 2487 Columbia Road 3, died at Magnolia Regional Medical Center at 1:14 a.m. Thursday.

Glass was a passenger of a 1999 model Ford pick-up truck driven by Blane Austin Acklin, 22, 220 Troy, Magnolia.

The state police report said that Acklin was driving the truck west on the county road, which is the road that skirts the south side of Lake Columbia, about 11 p.m. Acklin failed to negotiate a curve. The truck exited the roadway and struck a tree.

The victims were taken to MEMC and to Wadley Medical Center in Texarkana. They included Acklin and three other passengers, Heather Noel Henry, 19, of Emerson; Courtney Paige Cummings, 19, 20 Columbia 4W, Emerson; and John Colton Gray, 19, 1320 Columbia 26, Emerson.460 Columbia.

The weather was clear and the road was dry.

Trooper Dakotah Bailey investigated the accident.

According to his Facebook page, Glass was employed by Willbros Downstream. His death was Columbia County’s first traffic fatality of 2014. There were five highway deaths in the county in both 2013 and 2012.
