Jerry Pritchard

Jerry Pritchard is charged with first-degree murder in the death of SaQuanna Young.

A McNeil woman was shot and killed Monday night, and her alleged stalker was arrested.

SaQuanna Young, 32, was fatally wounded at the Woodland Hills Apartments off County Road 120 on the northwest side of McNeil.

Another woman in the apartment, Veronica Smith, 28, of Waldo, was shot in the thigh.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that deputies were dispatched at 11:24 p.m. to a report of shots being fired. Sheriff Mike Loe said that someone fired a handgun into a room at the apartment from the outside.

Jerry Pritchard, 31, of Magnolia was identified as a suspect and arrested by the Magnolia Police Department during a traffic stop at about 12:24 a.m. Tuesday.

Loe said Pritchard was being charged with first-degree murder, stalking, terroristic act and first-degree battery.

Young was pronounced dead by Coroner Randy Reed. Smith was taken by the Columbia County Ambulance Service to Magnolia Regional Medical Center.

At least one other person was inside the apartment but identities have not been released. Loe said that there had been a previous complaint of possible stalking of the victim at the apartment, but no suspect was identified.

Pritchard, who has no apparent prior criminal record in Columbia County, is being held at the Justice and Detention Facility. Loe anticipates that Pritchard’s initial court appearance will be on Wednesday.

The Magnolia Police Department and Arkansas State Police are assisting in the investigation.

There have been two other fatal shootings in Columbia County during 2020. No charges were filed in the March case. Four people were arrested in connection with the shooting death of a student and the wounding of a second at Southern Arkansas University in August.
