Scam alert

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public about three different telephone or online scams making the rounds on Thursday.

“First of the three is the scam involving Entergy that if you don't pay today over the phone or send money through Walmart, they will turn your power off. Entergy has several ways of contacting you and they will not ask for you to ever send money via Walmart.

“The second scam we have received reports today is the one where your grandchild is calling either from jail or the hospital and needs money immediately. Please verify with your actual grandchildren if it is really them.

“The third and final scam so far today is that your Social Security number has been compromised or suspended and they need you to verify your identity. The Social Security Administration is not going to call you about your Social Security number,” the statement said.
