De’Taevias Cooper, 18, of Magnolia has been arrested as the driver of the vehicle that crashed Sunday morning into The Corner Clubhouse restaurant on the Magnolia Square.
Magnolia police announced the arrest on Tuesday afternoon.
On Monday, investigators were able to identify the driver of the vehicle as Cooper. They obtained an arrest warrant.
Later Monday afternoon, Cooper turned himself into the Magnolia Police Department. He is charged with fleeing by vehicle and criminal mischief first degree.
There were two people in the vehicle that Cooper crashed into the north wall of The Corner Clubhouse at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday while being pursued by Magnolia police. Police said Tuesday that the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Magnolia Police Department Criminal Investigation’s Division at 870-234-2323.
The incident began when Magnolia officers attempted a traffic stop on a maroon-colored Nissan Altima near the intersection of Jeff Davis and North Vine streets. The Altima and a police vehicle became southbound on North Washington Street. The vehicle entered the one-way portion of Washington near the Square and tried to make a left-hand turn onto East Main Street.
Instead, the car crashed through the north wall of The Corner Clubhouse. The two men inside the vehicle got out and ran south toward Calhoun Street as the pursuing officer tried to find out if anyone was still inside the vehicle.
The restaurant will be closed until further notice.
