A suspect in Monday’s shooting death of Damarras Akheen “Squirt” Henderson, 24, of El Dorado, died Tuesday night as a result of an officer-involved shooting at the Preston Apartments on Renfroe Street in Magnolia.
Columbia County Sheriff Mike Loe said in a statement about 1:10 a.m. Wednesday that a deputy sheriff went to the apartment complex about 11:10 p.m. Tuesday to arrest the suspect on a charge of first-degree murder.
There has been no official disclosure of the suspect's name, but family members have identified him to news media as Roderick McDaniel, 33, of Magnolia.
Loe said that shots were fired and the suspect was hit. The suspect was taken to Magnolia Regional Medical Center, where he later died.
The deputy was not injured. Loe said that deputy has been placed on administrative leave.
Loe said the Arkansas State Police will investigate the officer-involved shooting. This is standard procedure in cases where local officers are involved in shootings. The state investigators will turn their findings over to the 13th Judicial District prosecuting attorney.
Henderson’s body was found after Magnolia officers went to the Magnuson Hotel on East Main Street at 6:40 p.m. Monday in response to a report of a shot being fired near the hotel, and that an injured man had gone into one of the rooms.
Officers arrived and spoke with witnesses, and checked a room to find Henderson deceased.
The Henderson homicide was the second of two apparently unrelated homicides in Magnolia on Monday.
Jarious Shaw, 22, who died Monday afternoon from injuries sustained in a shooting on Norma Street, lived at Preston Apartments. No arrest has been made in the Shaw homicide.
