A portion of U.S. 79 south of Magnolia reopened about 11:05 p.m. Thursday hours after a vehicle collision and fire.
The accident happened about 5:19 p.m. when a tanker truck carrying 140 barrels of crude oil collided with a passenger vehicle in the sharp curve just north of the entrance to the Albemarle Corporation’s South Plant.
The passenger vehicle and truck's cab was burned in the accident, including fuel from the truck's saddle tanks. The tanker remained intact. The 79 South and Emerson volunteer fire departments responded, along with the Albemarle fire brigade.
There was an injury but no fatalities.
Traffic was rerouted to County Road 7 at the Commercial Metals Company plant turnoff, and Columbia County Road 79 – which is not the same road as the U.S. highway.
