Magnolia police are looking for two men who ran away after the car they occupied demolished part of The Corner Clubhouse on the Magnolia Square.
“It sums up 2020 pretty well for us,” said restaurant co-owner Alexandra Langston.
The Corner Clubhouse and other restaurants have faced several challenges due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
“It’s a miracle that nobody was seriously hurt or killed in this. It’s just a wall and a couple of windows and a lot of clean-up,” she said.
Magnolia Police Chief Todd Dew said on Sunday morning that officers attempted a traffic stop on a maroon-colored Nissan Altima about 12:40 a.m. near the intersection of Jeff Davis and North Vine streets.
The Altima and a police vehicle became southbound on North Washington Street. The suspect vehicle entered the one-way portion of Washington near the Square and tried to make a left-hand turn onto East Main Street.
Instead, the car crashed through the north wall of The Corner Clubhouse.
The two men inside the vehicle got out and ran south toward Calhoun Street as the pursuing officer tried to find out if anyone was still inside the vehicle.
The Altima slammed into the brick-and-glass wall of the restaurant, and came to a stop with the front half of the car inside the business.
The restaurant had closed about 9:30 p.m. Saturday. There were no employees inside.
The suspects remained at large on Sunday.
Langston and employees swept debris into a pile inside the restaurant.
She had originally hoped to reopen on Monday but that will not be possible. The Corner Clubhouse will reopen at a later date.
The force of the impact sent shards of glass flying through the building. Langston said a more thorough cleaning job will be done later today.
At about 4 a.m., she was awaiting the arrival of plywood to board up the building.
The can snagged a support beam, which had to be cut by the Magnolia Fire Department to free it so that the wreck could be hauled away.
The building is owned by Bret and Cathy McMahen, who formerly operated Mule's Cantina at the location.
