Highway death

A Magnolia man was killed in a wreck on U.S. 79 about 2:23 a.m. Sunday.

A Magnolia man died early Sunday in a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 79 south of Magnolia.

According to a preliminary Arkansas State Police report, Montez Donyaya Moddies, 32, was driving a 2005 model Mercury south on the highway when he veered off the roadway. The car struck a tree. Moddies died at the scene.

The accident was reported at 2:23 a.m.

The weather was clear and the road was dry.

The body was released to R.L. Reed Funeral Home.

Trooper 1st Class Brent Walker investigated the accident.

This was the second fatal automobile accident in Columbia County this year. A Springhill, LA youth died February 29 in a wreck on U.S. 371 between Taylor and Bussey. There were five fatalities in 2019, including one pedestrian who was struck by a train.
