Medicare’s Part D annual open enrollment begins October 15 and runs through December 7.
It’s time for people 65 and older to begin thinking about their Medicare coverage and be ready to shop and compare plans.
Drug costs (premiums, deductibles, and formularies) change every year. People who are unhappy with their current plan with have the chance to select a new one during open enrollment.
Use the Medicare Plan finder at www.medicare.gov, or call the Area Agency on Aging, 1-800-272-2127 for help. People turning 65 and not yet receiving a Social Security check can sign up for Medicare starting three months prior to their birthday month, the month of their 65th birthday, or up to three months after the 65th birthday.
This is the 7-Month Initial Enrollment Period. If this enrollment period is missed, then an individual can enroll from January 1 to March 31. Late enrollment penalties of 10 percent apply for each year one might have enrolled but didn’t.
