Butter cookies are a popular item at the Magnolia Bake Shop.

One of Magnolia’s most iconic businesses has changed hands, and it’s a pretty sweet deal.

Amanda and Jimmy Ybarra have purchased the Magnolia Bake Shop, 103 N. Jefferson, from Steven and Joe Stroope. The deal includes both the business name and contents, and the 18-foot by 55-foot building on the west side of the Magnolia Square.

The Stroopes announced the pending sale in February, which became final last week. Amanda Ybarra steps up from manager to owner.

The Magnolia Bake Shop has been under the continuous operation of three generations of the Stroope family since 1928. It is well known across the region for its home-made birthday and wedding cakes, coconut cakes, pies, cupcakes, gingerbread, butter (better known as “dots” because of a dollop of icing) cookies, breakfast-time sausage biscuits and pigs in a blanket, bread and a variety of cookies.

“Everything will stay the same. We just plan on updating the menu some by adding a few new items,” Amanda Ybarra said.

To do this, Magnolia Bake Shop will delve into Joe Stroope’s old recipe book but add new items including chocolate, orange and red velvet cakes, cherry pies and blueberry doughnuts.

“We just want to keep the traditional but all a little new,” she said. There will also be a minor remodeling.

Farmers Bank & Trust is financing the $160,000 mortgage, according to Columbia County property records.
