Heather and Jeffrey Becker announced plans on Thursday to transform a space on the Magnolia Square into an ice cream and treat shop.
The Beckers recently purchased The Loft on the Square on the south side of the square from Sandra McCalman. The Loft, a three-suite boutique hotel, will remain in operation on the second floor.
The first floor, which was formerly known as the Cosmopolitan Ladies Club, will become “Maggie’s.”
“Maggie’s” is described by the Beckers as “a fun place to gather and enjoy each other's company over artisanal ice cream, delicious cupcakes, and other sweet treats. A dedication to provide keto friendly, gluten free and other healthy options will also be a driving force as the recipes are tweaked and menu is finalized.”
They hope to open Maggie’s in January. Tentative hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday-Saturday.
Heather Becker was raised in Magnolia. She spent much of her early years at Bobby Hinson Ford, and in Camden at Freer's where her grandmother, Alene Layton, provided fine women's clothing.
The Beckers said they have searched for good downtown properties in the towns where they have lived, starting in West Texas and back to Magnolia. Their hope with Maggie’s is to create a family-friendly atmosphere.
Changes are also ahead for The Loft.
The upstairs portion will continue to serve as nightly and long-term stay suites. It offers updated décor and new high speed fiber internet.
New private baths will be added, in addition to streaming TV service and a spotlight on the work of local artists.
The original building was constructed in the 1880s and first housed the Columbia County Bank.
