Columbia County employment

Columbia County's unemployment rate dropped to 4.0 percent in October, down from 4.2 percent in September, according to a report released this past week by the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services.

The DWS said that in October, Columbia County had a labor force of 9,188 persons with 8,817 employed and 371 unemployed. September's labor force was 9,191 persons with 8,807 employed and 384 unemployed.

Statewide, Arkansas' unemployment rate was posted at 3.5 percent for October, unchanged from September. For October, Arkansas' labor force was 1,363,806 persons with 1,316,012 employed and 47,794 unemployed. This compares to September's labor force of 1,362,193 persons with 1,315,091 employed and 47,102 unemployed.

Nationally, the United States' unemployment rate was recorded at 3.6 percent for October. DWS statistics indicated that for October, the U.S. labor force was 164,364,000 persons with 158,510,000 employed and 5,855,000 unemployed. This

compares to September's labor force of 164,039,000 persons with 158,269,000 employed and 5,769,000 unemployed.

Of the seven neighboring Southwest Arkansas counties surveyed, five counties' jobless rates declined and two counties' rates remained unchanged from September.

Calhoun County had an unemployment rate of 3.5 percent for October, unchanged from September.

Hempstead County had an unemployment rate of 3.5 percent for October, unchanged from September.

Lafayette County had an unemployment rate of 4.3 percent for October, down from 4.7 percent in September.

Miller County had an unemployment rate of 3.6 percent for October, down from 3.8 percent in September.

Nevada County had an unemployment rate of 3.7 percent for October, down from 3.8 percent in September.

Ouachita County had an unemployment rate of 4.5 percent for October, down from 4.6 percent in September.

Union County had an unemployment rate of 4.8 percent for October, down from 4.9 percent in September.
