Almost 8,700 people have jobs in Columbia County.

Columbia County's unemployment rate rose to 4.9 percent for June, up from 4.4 percent in May, according to a county-by-county unemployment report released this past week by the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services.

According to the ADWS report, for June Columbia County had a labor force of 9,133 persons with 8,687 employed and 446 unemployed. This compares to May's labor force of 9,191 with 8,785 employed and 406 unemployed.

Statewide, Arkansas' unemployment rate was recorded at 3.5 percent for June, down from 3.6 percent in May. According to the ADWS report, for June Arkansas' labor force was 1,362,631 with 1,315,337 employed and 47,294 unemployed. Arkansas' labor force for May was 1,361,929 with 1,313,429 employed and 48,500 unemployed.

Nationally, the United States unemployment rate was posted at 3.7 percent for June, up from 3.6 percent in May. According to the report, for June the U.S. labor force was 162,981,000 with 157,005,000 employed and 5,975,000 unemployed. The U.S. labor force for May was 162,646,000 with 156,768,000 employed and 5,888,000 unemployed.

Of the seven neighboring Southwest Arkansas counties surveyed, all showed an increase in the jobless rate from May to June.

Calhoun County's unemployment rate was 4.4 percent for June, up from 4.0 percent in May.

Hempstead County's unemployment rate was 3.8 percent for June, up from 3.4 percent in May.

Lafayette County's unemployment rate was 4.7 percent for June, up from 4.2 percent in May.

Miller County's unemployment rate was 4.2 percent for June, up from 3.4 percent in May.

Nevada County's unemployment rate was 4.5 percent for June, up from 3.7 percent in May.

Ouachita County's unemployment rate was 4.9 percent for June, up from 4.8 percent in May.

Union County's unemployment rate was 5.3 percent for June, up from 4.7 percent in May.
