Columbia County's jobless rate is 4.2 percent.

Columbia County's unemployment rate dropped to 4.2 percent in September, down from 4.8 percent in August, according to a preliminary county by county unemployment report released this week by the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services.

These figures are not seasonally adjusted.

According to the ADWS report, for September, Columbia County had a labor force of 9,191 individuals, with 8,807 considered "employed" and 384 considered "unemployed." This compares to a labor force of 8,912 persons in August with 8,433 employed and 429 unemployed.

Statewide, Arkansas' unemployment rate is recorded at 3.5 percent for September, up from 3.4 percent in August. According to the report, for September Arkansas had a labor force of 1,362,193 persons with 1,315,091 employed and 47,102 unemployed.

This compares to August's labor force of 1,362,514 with 1,315,649 employed and 46,865 unemployed.

Nationally, the United States' jobless rate is posted at 3.5 percent for September, down from 3.7 percent in August. The ADWS report stated that for September the U.S. had a labor force of 164,039,000 people with 158,269,000 employed and 5,769,000 unemployed. This compares to the August labor force of 163,922,000 with 157,878,000 employed and 6,044,000 unemployed.

Of the seven surrounding Southwest Arkansas counties surveyed, all showed a decline in the unemployment rate from August to September.

Calhoun County's unemployment rate is at 3.5 percent for September, down from 4.2 percent in August.

Hempstead County's unemployment rate is at 3.5 percent for September, down from 4.0 percent in August.

Lafayette County's unemployment rate is at 4.7 percent for September, down from 5.1 percent in August.

Miller County's unemployment rate is at 3.8 percent for September, down from 4.1 percent in August.

Nevada County's unemployment rate is at 3.8 percent for September, down from 4.0 percent in August.

Ouachita County's unemployment rate is at 4.6 percent for September, down from 5.0 percent in August.

Union County's unemployment rate is at 4.9 percent for September, down from 5.3 percent in August.
