A murder investigation is under way in Stamps.

One man has been arrested after a Stamps woman was found dead in her home.

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that at approximately 11:27 p.m. Sunday, law enforcement was asked to check on the welfare of Deborah Barton, 55, at 310 Calvin St. in Stamps.

Stamps Police Chief Jeff Black responded and made entry into the house. He found Barton dead, and the scene suggested a homicide.

The Arkansas State Police was called to take the lead in the investigation. This led to the arrest of Jonathan Tanner of Garland City.

Barton’s body has been sent to the Arkansas Crime Lab in Little Rock for an autopsy. There has not been a motive established yet, and the case remains under investigation.

Chief Black thanked Arkansas State Police, Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, and Lewisville Police Department for their assistance.
