The South Arkansas Arts Center plans classes for adults.

EL DORADO -- The South Arkansas Arts Center has scheduled two adult art classes for January 2019.

The first is “Defining and Practicing the Elements of Art” with Kelly Campbell. The six-week class covering the basic elements of art starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday and meets weekly for 90 minutes through February 20. Cost of the class is $150, and class size is limited to 10. Participants need only a pencil and a sketchbook.

Kelly said, “This class is great for anyone who never had a formal art class or for anyone who just wants a refresher. Once a week for six weeks will give us ample time to talk about each of the elements in depth and to practice using the elements of art effectively.” She added, “I plan to have a weekly class for six weeks later on that does the same for the principles of design.”

A retired art teacher with 26 years experience, she believes that learning about the elements of art is important for beginning artists as a base for their art. She also believes that occasionally revisiting those basics can help practicing artists take their art in new directions.

Well known El Dorado artist Gay Bechtelheimer will teach a two day watercolor class for beginners on Saturday and Sunday, January 26-27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost for the class is $110 per person with a minimum of five painters.

Bechtelheimer said, “This class is about understanding the basic techniques of watercolor. We will learn the properties of watercolor pigment and paper, how to apply washes, layer paint, and create a series of paintings.”

A member of the Arkansas Arts Council, she also teaches art at Northwest and has a weekly open studio at SAAC.

Supplies for the workshop are: two sheets of Arches 140 lb. cold press paper (Hobby Lobby), #8 round watercolor brush (Hobby Lobby), 24”x36” masonite board (Home Depot), and painters’ tape. Bechtelheimer said that she has plenty of palettes that participants can use, so there is no need to buy a palette.

The paint she recommends is Daniel Smith (smallest tube) – New Gamboge, Indian Throne Blue, and Quinacridone Red, which can be ordered from dickblick.com.
