The Magnolia-Columbia County Literacy Council will host a “Black Thursday” auction from 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the Grand Hall at Southern Arkansas University’s Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center.
Auction items are still being accepted to help raise $5,000 for the council’s programs, including Teen Tutoring, Ride Out and English as a Second Language.
The council hopes to update its Teen Tutoring classroom with newer computers and technology which will assist youths in obtaining their GED.
Due to a higher number of ESL clients, the council wants to purchase the English Forward curriculum to facilitate a weekly ESL group class in the spring.
The Ride Out program started in April and has paid for the transportation costs for more than 15 students. One of the students was able to earn a GED, and is currently working on WAGE certification to obtain gainful employment in Magnolia.
